SALCOS

In its move towards CO2-free steel production, Salzgitter AG has reached another milestone: during the first of three stages in its SALCOS® transformation program (SAlzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) the Group has commissioned a consortium comprising Tenova, Danieli and the DSD Steel Group to construct a direct reduction installation (DRI plant). The unit will have a production capacity of a good two million metric tons of directly reduced iron (DRI) per year.

“I’m proud that we as a pioneer have now been able to award the contract for the first stage in our transformation program to our strong partners with all funding in place,” says Gunnar Groebler, CEO of Salzgitter AG. “We’ve thus moved a major step closer to implementing our SALCOS® strategy.”

From the end of 2025 the first stage of SALCOS®, that includes not just the DRI plant but also an electric arc furnace and a 100-MW electrolysis plant, will enter the commissioning phase. Full conversion of steel production at the Salzgitter facility is to be concluded by the end of 2033.
