With the new photovoltaic system at its production site in Ahmedabad, KHS in India is taking on a pioneering role. In doing so, the company again underlines its commitment to sustainable growth and climate protection.

In India’s Ahmedabad region, home to millions of people, the sun shines for up to 3,000 hours a year. It’s thus hardly surprising that the KHS factory here makes good use of solar power. A new photovoltaic system installed on the rooftops of two production shops enables the plant to generate 1,100 megawatt hours of electricity per annum, covering around 80% of its total requirement. This won’t stop here, either: “By 2028, we’ll have increased capacity using infrastructure already prepared so that we’ll be completely autonomous in our electricity generation,” explains Biresh Banerjee, responsible for Facility Management, Safety, Health, Environment & Energy (SHEE) and Sustainability at Indian subsidiary KHS Machinery Pvt. Ltd.

Increased use of renewables

This climate strategy plays a key role in the KHS Group’s sustainability targets. The company aims to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and to cut its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 36% by 2028. “In a global company like KHS, a large percentage of our location-based emissions is generated at our international production sites,” says Dr. Julia Niehaus, senior manager of Sustainability Management and Strategic Projects at KHS headquarters. “Our decarbonization path therefore applies to all our factories. Using our own PV systems, for example, continuously increases the share of renewable energies in our total energy supply. Our investments in growth market India demonstrate that technological market leadership and sustainable action go hand in hand at KHS.”

Further model PV systems can be found at KHS production site in Kunshan, China, in use since the end of 2025 with an annual output of 1,000 megawatt hours, and in Germany: over the past couple of years, PV systems have been set up at the plants in Dortmund, Bad Kreuznach and Worms in cooperation with the MaGeno-Solar employees’ cooperative.
