In order to expand the position of subsidiary Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH as a leading supplier of premium products, the Salzgitter Group has erected a third hot dip galvanizing line for around €200 million – the largest single investment in the last ten years. In doing so, the corporate group is pursuing its strategy of further qualitative growth in the strip steel segment. In addition, 70 new jobs will be created at the Flachstahl GmbH site.
Readied for operation in October 2022 and following a successful ramp-up phase, the new plant will produce approximately 500,000 tons a year of hot dip galvanized sheet with thicknesses of between 0.7 and 2.5 millimeters and widths of 900 to 1,700 millimeters. The annealing furnace forms the centerpiece of the new plant that heats and cools the material much faster than in the past and reaches a higher annealing temperature. This facilitates the production of high- and ultra-high-strength steels used for vehicle bodies and chassis in car manufacture and for sophisticated surface components in the domestic appliances sector.
