Am Eingang zum Nationalpark Skoler Beskiden in Trans­karpatien grüßt von einem Monument aus Sichtbeton der Erzengel Michael. Zu seinen Füßen wird auf zwei Trembitas geblasen, den extrem lauten traditionellen Holztrompeten des hier heimischen Volksstamms der Huzulen.
Seit fast 110 Jahren verkehrt die U-Bahn, kurz Subte genannt, unter der Millionenmetropole – damit ist sie die älteste der gesamten südlichen Hemisphäre. Heute umfasst ihr seit den 1930er-Jahren immer wieder erweitertes Liniennetz rund 54 Kilometer.
„Den Blå Planet“ – der Blaue Planet – heißt das Aquarium, dessen Ozeanbecken 4 Millionen Liter fasst. Haie, Rochen und viele weitere Meeresbewohner lassen sich durch eine 128 Quadratmeter große und 45 Zentimeter dicke Glasscheibe aus nächster Nähe bestaunen.

At the entrance to the Skole Beskids National Nature Park in Transcarpathia Archangel Michael welcomes visitors from a monument made of exposed concrete. At his feet two men blow their trembitas, the extremely loud, traditional wooden alphorns popular among the local ethnic Hutsul community.

The ocean basin at the Blå Planet or blue planet aquarium has a capacity of four million liters. Sharks, rays and lots of other marine inhabitants can be studied close up through a 45-centimeter-thick pane of glass measuring 128 square meters in area.
